Home/Air Quality/Air Purifier Room Size

What Size Air Purifier Do I Need?

Choosing the right size air purifier is more important than choosing a brand. Too small and it's ineffective. Too large and you're overpaying. Here's how to calculate it properly.

Step 1: Measure Your Room

Measure:

Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Example: 15 ft × 20 ft = 300 sq ft

Step 2: Account for Ceiling Height

Standard calculations assume 8 ft ceilings. If your ceiling is higher, adjust:

Adjusted Room Size = (Room Sq Ft × Ceiling Height) / 8

Example: 300 sq ft with 10 ft ceiling: (300 × 10) / 8 = 375 sq ft equivalent

Step 3: Choose Target ACH

For general home use:

  • Minimum: 4 ACH
  • Ideal: 5 ACH
  • Allergies / wildfire: 5–6 ACH

Learn more about air changes per hour in our What Is ACH? guide.

Step 4: Calculate Required CADR

Formula:

Required CADR (CFM) = (Room Volume in ft³ × Desired ACH) / 60

Example:

300 sq ft room, 8 ft ceiling

Volume = 2,400 ft³

Target ACH = 5

CADR = (2,400 × 5) / 60 = 200 CFM

You need at least 200 CFM Smoke CADR. Learn more in our What Is CADR? guide.

Room Size Calculator

Enter your room dimensions to calculate the exact CADR you need.

Room Area: 300 sq ft

Room Volume: 2400 ft³

(2400 ft³ × 5) / 60 = 200 CFM

Required CADR

200 CFM

Look for an air purifier with at least 200 CFM Smoke CADR. When in doubt, oversize slightly. See our CADR guide for more detail.

Undersized vs Oversized

What Happens If You Undersize?

  • Low ACH
  • Slow pollutant removal
  • Poor allergy relief
  • Higher long-term frustration

What Happens If You Oversize?

Usually beneficial:

  • Run at lower speed
  • Lower noise
  • Longer filter lifespan
  • Better real-world performance

Oversizing is safer than undersizing.

Special Situations

Wildfire Smoke

Match CADR to room size (1:1 ratio)

Allergies

Target 5–6 ACH

Pets

High Smoke CADR + sealed HEPA

Large Open Spaces

Multiple units often better than one giant purifier

Don't Trust "Max Coverage"Claims

If a purifier says: " Covers 1,000 sq ft" — check: at what ACH?

If it's 1–2 ACH, that is not effective. Always verify the CADR rating against our CADR guide and ACH guide.

Should You Put One Purifier Per Room?

Yes. Air purifiers cannot effectively clean air through walls and doors. Bedrooms need their own unit.

Check our best air purifier for bedroom guide for quiet, properly sized options.

What About Whole-Home Systems?

HVAC cabinet filters:

  • Reduce recirculated dust
  • Protect equipment

But they do not provide rapid in-room cleaning like standalone purifiers. See our best air purifiers of 2026 for top standalone picks.

Practical Example Calculations

Bedroom Example

12 × 12 ft = 144 sq ft

Volume = 1,152 ft³

Target ACH = 5

CADR = (1,152 × 5) / 60 = 96 CFM

You need ~100 CFM minimum.

Living Room Example

20 × 25 ft = 500 sq ft

Volume = 4,000 ft³

Target ACH = 5

CADR = (4,000 × 5) / 60 = 333 CFM

Look for at least 350 CFM Smoke CADR.

See our best air purifiers of 2026 for models with high CADR.

Final Recommendation

When choosing air purifier size:

  1. 1Measure room
  2. 2Adjust for ceiling height
  3. 3Target 5 ACH
  4. 4Calculate required CADR
  5. 5Slightly oversize if possible
