How Viruses Travel in the Air
Viruses themselves are extremely small:
- Most viruses: 0.02–0.3 microns
- SARS-CoV-2 (COVID virus): ~0.1 microns
But here's the key: viruses rarely float alone. They travel inside:
Respiratory Droplets
> 5 microns — fall quickly but carry high viral load
Aerosols
0.5–5 microns — linger in the air for hours
Those particle sizes are well within HEPA capture range. This is why air purifiers can meaningfully reduce airborne virus transmission.
